Ottawa, Canada
So we're in Canada, and during the last winter Olympics in Vancouver I watched Curling for the first time and it seemed like a lot of fun but, confusing. So We learned how to play this at the Nepean Sportplex Curling Centre! It was so much fun and at $101.75 per person, which was totally worth it! I had so much fun trying to get that concrete like puck down the ice into the smallest square! It takes a lot of precision, which makes you want to keep on trying, I almost had more fun knocking other peoples puck out of the way! Ha!

Theres was a little trouble finding a flight departing directly from
Carcassonne, France so we had to take a 7 hour train ride to the
Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. For 6 people this cost us about 714
Euros which is $960.20. I booked our train ticket through
http://www.raileurope.co.uk. This was kind of nice to see more of the
country of France while we were on our train ride and it looked unbelievable. However, it was
pretty exhausting at the same time. Then from Paris we took an 11
hour plane ride to Ottawa, Canada connecting through Montreal on
flight AF344 Air France. This was quite expensive costing $3,834 per
person, $23,006.00 total. I also went ahead and booked our plane home
to Raleigh from Ottawa on Delta flight 3916 connecting through Detroit
and New York. This plane trip cost $376.77 per person and totaling
out to $2,260.62.

We took a day trip to the majestic Gatineau Park which is just minutes from downtown Ottawa. There are many reasons why this park is really cool, first because they focus their efforts on conservation and preservation. The second reason is that it is not too far from town and there are many great natural views from the peaks. The best view was from Champlain Lookout, check out the picture below!!
We rented mountain bikes and helmets to get us to the park during our visit. It was about a 20 minute ride from downtown and we stayed there all day riding many of their mountain bike trails. The cost for the bikes was $50 per day, so a total cost of $300.00. The weather was relatively cold, but bearable with moderate exercise. We had a high of only 45 degrees that day but it was mostly sunny!
Neat park with many peaks and lakes!

Accommodations:
For our accommodations this week in Carcassonne, France I figured we could stay at Hotel Balladins. Balladins Carcassonne is located 4 miles from Carcassonne Airport and just 2.5 miles from the medieval part of town, which made it easy to gain access to. The hotel offers us air-conditioned rooms equipped with a TV with satellite channels. The rooms at the Balladins are decorated in a simple, modern style. Each room has a private bathroom with a shower, which was nice. A desk is provided and Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. The Wi-Fi is what we all liked because we could sent emails and talk with family from back home. The hotel for 7 nights is 868 Euro which is 1,167.90 dollars. The hotel offers us breakfast so we can eat there. Carcassonne is a very expensive city so the restaurants are expensive in price but they are very worth eating at. All restaurants are close by so we could walk or take a taxi.
Restaurants:
First night: Restaurant L ‘Ecurie. 6 people is $282.60. (210 Euros). We chose the 35 euro menu.
Second night: Le Sixieme Sens. 6 people is $177.62. (132 Euros). We chose the 22 Euro menu.
Third night: Restaurant Le Parc Franck Putelat. 6 people is $250.10. (186 Euros) We chose the 31 euro menu.
Fourth night: Restaurant La Marquière. 6 people is $243.15. (180 Euros) We chose from the 30 euro menu.
Fifth night: Restaurant Le pott'age. 6 people is $113.44. (84 Euros) We chose from the 14 euro menu.
Sixth night: Restaurant Le Magnac. 6 people is $121.48. (90 Euros) We chose from the 15 Euro menu.
Seventh night: Everyone was on their own for this night. We all went out and found a place where we want to go before we leave.
Total for everything is $2,356.29

Build Monument:
During our trip into the fortified ancient city of Carcassonne, we made a stop at the main fountain within the fortress. This statue had a gigantic portrayal of Neptune on the top. Neptune was the Greek God of water and the sea. This statue had many streams of water coming out of it and flowed through channels through the streets in town. The water is recycled after coming out of the fountain. This fountain was huge. Check out the picture attached. Originally erected in 1673, the fountain and the rest of Place Carnot underwent extensive renovations in 1993, creating a great open-air market place with many vendors selling fruits, vegetables, and many other local goods.
A couple of the features on this built monument is that there is the town’s coat of arms sculpted on the north side, the arms of France on the south side, and an inscription on the east side reads: “Ut fugit unda fluens, fugiunt sic ludicra caecae munera fortunae, nec manet usque favens” (Just as this water flows past, so the precious gifts of blind fortune fade away) I thought this was a great monument and I was fascinated that something that was created so long ago could still be the centerpiece of a lively town square.

Natural Site:
This week for the natural site portion of our trip to Carcassonne,
France I decided that we could go and visit a bird and wolf park. I
choose this because it was something different than the usual castles
that the city has to offer. The name of the bird and wolf park is
'LA CITÉ DES OISEAUX ET LES LOUPS DE CARCASSONNE' BIRD AND WOLF PARK.
This translated into English means "city of wolves and birds of
Carcassonne." At the beginning of the show we are taken to the
heights of the Colline de Pech Mary, home of the Cité des Oiseaux. I
immediately noticed the beautiful surrounding that we have been placed
in and before our group knew it we could see some crazy acrobatics
from Griffon vultures, white storks, eagles from America, marabou from
Africa and kookaburra from Australia. While they were doing these
flips and spins their highly trained bird trainers were telling us
everything about them. It was great to hear and see something that we
never have before. I soon learned that the owners in 2006 decided to
let wolves into the park as well. We were a bit nervous at first but
then noticed that they were trained as well and surprisingly, very
people friendly. At the end of the show I think our group was very
impressed and quite happy with the show. The show cost us 8.50 Euros
per person which totals out to be 69.90 US Dollars. We also needed to
take a taxi from our hotel which cost us around 10 Euros. This is
about 15 US Dollars so the total for our excursion costs $84.90. I
received my information from
http://www.easyvoyage.co.uk/france/-la-cite-des-oiseaux-et-les-loups-de-carcassonne-bird-and-wolf-park-4924.
I have also attached a picture of only a few of the birds that we got
to see.

Recreation/Sport Activity
The trip to Carcassonne, France was unbelievable!. It was by far one of the best times I’ve had on our trips so far this year. I especially enjoyed our recreational/sport activity. Because the city of Carcassone is a city based almost completely on tourism, it was hard to find a recreation and sport attraction, but we finally figured it out and had an awesome time! The place we went to was known as Lac de la Cavayere, also known as Raymond Chesa Leisure Park. This park is located about 1.5 or 2 miles away from the main center of the medieval city of Carcassone, so we decided that it would be fun to have a nice little bike ride to the place. Price of rentals for the bike were 15 euros a day per person, which equals out to be around $21 dollars a day. The total for the bike rentals for the day is $126. When we got to the park, there were so many options we didn't know where to begin. We decided to start with the hike around their nature trail, this took us around an hour but we got to see many beautiful sights. Other then the walk around the lake, there were many other activities for us to partake in including water sports, fishing, and much more. Swimming is allowed at this park, and it's almost exactly like a beach! My favorite part was when the six of us tried to challenge some locals in a game of water polo and we all got killed! I also enjoyed the little picnic we had, because when we brought food with us we didn't have to pay any money for food. Overall, I enjoyed the trip to Lac de la Cavayere very much, and because there is no entrance fee the only thing we had to pay for was the bike rentals for the day, which ended up being right around $126.

Erin: Cultural/Historic Site
The City of Carcassonne is filled with rich history and preserved culture, but for this leg of the trip we dicided to visit the Castle of Carcasssonne. This Castle is located in the center of the city, and is a massive reminder of the past. Knowing little about castles we opted to go for a 45 minute guided tour around the castle. We started out with this tour and learned quite a bit about the history of the city, and that it was strategically located to fend off their enemies, and it even has a Drawbridge! The tour guide explained that the French and others that conquered the city used it as a defence mechanism mainly against the spaniards. The tour guide explained which parts of the castle were modified and changed by each group that captured the castle. After the tour we spent a few hours wandering around the castle on our own and taking quite a bit of pictures! It was a really unique expereince, and a lot of fun to actually be able to say that we were in a Castle! To get to and from the castle we took a taxi that cost us 140 Euros Round Trip.

Transportation:
So there were no flights from Pisa to Carcassonne, so we had to fly into Toulouse airport just over an hour away. So we took flight LH317 from Pisa to Munich, and then Munich to Toulouse. Our flight leaves at 10:40 am, arrive at 12:20 in Munich, then we have a 40 minute layover. We leave at 1 and arrive in France at 2:50. The total flight is 4 hours and 10 minutes. The total for flight for the 6 of us is $4195.74 in USD, and 3,116.58 euro. We have to rent a car to get to Carcassonne, so we rent a small van Europcar, to book the car is 249,58 in euro and $335.81 in USD. Even though we had to drive an hour to the hotel, we took this time to really enjoy the beautiful scenery of France! It was absolutely amazing to see the rolling hills and pass by some wine vineyards! This may have have been my favorite part of the trip!

Pisa, Italy
The plane flight from Macua China to Pisa Italy was quite pricey, and cost us $2,352 per person, this turned out to be a total of $14,112. From the airport we took one of the many free shuttles they have to get to our hotel. i found my information at http://www.orbitz.com/App/
For transportation in Pisa, Italy, i figured we could keep it easy and just take the city bus. Pisa has two trains, but since it is such a compact city there is really no need to waste money on the railroad. Also, there are many taxis and tourist horse carriages but once again, both of those are more expensive then the bus. The bus has many stops all around the city of Pisa so it is very convinient. I figured we would buy a 10 ticket booklet to save some money, which costs $12. About 3 of these each we would probably get to keep it safe. If each of us all got 3 10 ticket booklets the total price would come out to be $216.

This week in Pisa, Italy for the built monument, I thought we could go and see the world famous leaning tower of Pisa! I have always wanted to see the tower for my own eyes. It was quite the sight. It was amazing to see the 207 columns that make the tower. We got to go around the tower and experience the culture of Italy as well. It was a workout walking up the 297 step spiral staircase. But we eventually got to the top and it was a great sight to see Pisa, Italy from the top of the tower. This was one of my favorite monuments I have ever seen. It was a short taxi drive from our hotel to the tower. It was free to walk up the tower and around it. The taxi trip was about 10 Euro's. Which equals about 13 US dollars. I have also attached the picture and I got my information about the tower from http://www.towerofpisa.

Hotel website: http://www.
Night 1 food: We walked to sub shop recommended by the hotel/ we had chicken parmigiana subs. 7,00 euro per sub, so $57 total. So it would be $132.24 USD plus a $40 tip. So $172.24 total.
Night 2 food: One block away from the hotel we found cart selling sausage and pepper subs! At 6,50 per sub it was excellent! So $52.68 total. Night two we would have to eat pizza! The restaurant is only 1 mile from the hotel so would have a beautiful walk to help our appetite! We ate a Margherita pizza! (yum!) 5,50 euro and pizza salsiccia! (sausage) 6,00 euro. This pizza was wonderful and filling! So our food would cost us $7.57 and $8.26. So our meal would be cheap but amazing! So $16.43 total!

Night 5: We noticed a baked goods shop, so we stopped by and just ate bread, cookies and chips. It was filling and only cost 20,00 in euro, so $27.20.We ate at La Mangiatoia Ristorante Pizzeria, we ate gnocchi (9,00) and a risotto di mare (9,00). So it would be $12.38 USD per item. For this leg of the trip we decided to take a cycling tour around Pisa. The venue we rented the bikes from had self-guided and tour-guided tours. Knowing so little about the city we dicided to spend a little extra and have a tour guide. Along with a tour guide they provided us with an MP3 player as well so we could listen to further information about the city! The bikes were in great condition, and it was a very unique way to experience Pisa. The tour itself lasted 3 hours and we got to see: Piazza de miracoli, Piazza die Cavalieri, San michele in Borgo, San Sepolcro, san paolo a ripa d’Arno, and a little church in Santa Spina. The tour guides were very good about keeping us away from traffic on the roads which allowed the entire group to feel much safer. Our tour guide met us at the Leaning Tower of Pisa where our tour began. We quickly learned that the quickest way, and most popular way of travelling in Italy was by foot, so we set out early and took in the sights and sounds and walked to the Leaning Tower. This also alowed many members of our group to get out and take numerous pictures and experience a little bit of Italian lifestyle. It was amazing to hear the many different languages and smell the delicious aromas that seem to always occupy the streets in Italy.

Male, Maldives
The flights for this leg of the trip were quite more expensive than the res of our trip.
For 6 people the total price was $5458.44 which is 34684.0194 Yuan.
For the first lef we took an air bus off Air macau Flight # NX882 to Bangkok, and then spent the night in the Bangkok Airport. The next morning we took Malaysia Airlines Flight #MH785 that lands in Kuala Lumpur, and then a connecting flight to Male, Flight #MH177. The sleeping in the airport was not ideal, however we all slept a little bit which was nice. The Airbusses were very comfortable and had very nice accomodations so that was nice.

For our cultural and historic site I chose for us to visit the National Museum of Maldives. This is located in Male, in the Sultan Park which was part of the Sultan's palace. The museum has a great selection of objects that show the rich cultural heritage of the country. Some of the objects consisted of costumes, objects, pictures, and armor of the past Maldivian way of life. It was a great place for us to experience something new to us. We all had a ton of fun! The museum is located in Male so we only had to take a taxi from where we were staying to get to the museum. The taxi costs only about 115.00 Moldovan Leu's which is only about $10.00 I got my information from http://maldives.tourism- Recreational Activity: Matt: |
A short walk from our hotel is a large dive shop called Prodivers. Prodivers offers full day snorkeling trips on boats that visit multiple multiple dive sites. We checked in here and decided to each rent snorkeling gear and head out on the boat for the day. Throughout the course of the day, we saw many great species of turtles, manta rays, sharks and coral reefs. The water was so warm and clear and you could see the bottom from the surface in most places. We were all amazed by how abundant the tropical fish are there, and especially how huge these manta rays are. Check out the picture I snapped during one of our dives. A few of us had not been snorkeling before and were truly fascinated by this experience. The down side of the day was that a couple of us did not pack the Dramamine and got a little sick along the way! Thankfully our captain had some extra laying around, which made the rest of the day bearable. Hey man, the natural sight was difficult, but I figured since the Maldives Islands are known for their beaches and crystal blue oceans. I figured that we could take trip and just hang out at the beach and watch the sunset. We could swim, bogey board, surf and just lay out on the beautiful white beaches! It would be so relaxing, peaceful and just an extraordinary to experience! |

On this leg of the trip, we made our way to the airport from the Sumo Backpackers Hostel via subway on the Red Line. That total cost was 800 Japanese Yen per person for a total cost of 4800 Japanese Yen.
Once we arrived at the airport, we made our way to Eva Airlines where we caught our first leg of the flight, it was a 2 hour and 55 minute flight out to Taipei, Taiwan. We had a quick stop in Taipei, Taiwan for only an hour and 15 minutes. We had to frantically change planes in this time, and we almost didn’t make it. We were all also worried about our bags making it and thankfully they all did.
We hopped onto another plane for our final flight to Macau, China. This leg of the flight was a quick hour and forty-five minutes. I thought the flight was going to be longer, but was relieved when I found out we would be there quickly. Total travel time from Osaka to Macau was 5 hours and 55 minutes.
Once we arrived in Macau, China we jumped on one of the free shuttle busses, and that took us to our hotel a few minutes later.http://www.macau-airport.com/site/php/en/shuttle_bus.php
